The John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run is here, and the course is the front-lines for the newest maintenance tools from John Deere. "We are constantly seeking new innovations from John Deere and putting them to the test on the property," said Director of golf course maintenance, Alex Stuedemann.

"All of our fairway mowing is hybrid technology. They utilize an electric motor to turn the cutting head. What that has done, it not only reduces the amount of hydraulics on the these machines, but in the same vein, fuel consumption is far less because you're using electrical power to spin a motor versus diesel or gasoline power," said Stuedemann.

In addition to the state-of-the-art, efficient mowers (which cost between $30,000 and $70,000) the course has converted as much turf to natural areas as possible, without impacting play.

"It's not necessary for everything to be green and lush and cut it two inches tall. It can look just as beautiful and be just as functional at 10 to 12 inches," said Stuedemann.
