In this article from Turf Republic, Dr. Doug Soldat takes a look at hydrophobic soils and wetting agents. Featuring a picture and video from a wetting agent trial at the University of Wisconsin, soil cores from around the test area have been air dried for a week and then have a drop of water applied near the surface.

Not surprisingly, the soil with a properly applied wetting agent absorbs with water drop in around a minute, while the core with no wetting agent didn't absorb the water until over 6 minutes.
